Normandië 2010: inleiding

We zijn deze zomer voor het vierde jaar op rij naar Normandië gegaan. We hebben er een plekje gevonden waar we ons erg welkom voelen en waar we graag zijn. Een groot landgoed, voor je gevoel in the middle of nowhere, maar toch vlakbij de bewoonde wereld. Op een acceptabele afstand van bijvoorbeeld het strand en leuke plaatsjes.

Als je naar de foto's van 4 jaar Normandië kijkt, zie je ook leuk de ontwikkeling van de meiden.
Drie jaar geleden was de kleine blonde prinses een dreumes van net 1 jaar en nu een bijna redelijk zelfstandige kleuter. En de dame met de viool is van een kleuter veranderd in een puberende 8-jarige.

Het was deze zomer ook de eerste vakantie met Dustin, de blindengeleidehond. Hij vond het er fantastisch! Alle ruimte en vrijheid voor hem.

Al is de afstand vanuit Nederland prima in 1 dag te overbruggen, we kiezen er nu al 2 jaar voor om op de heenweg in Frankrijk in een hotel te overnachten. Omdat ik als enige rijd, maar ook omdat het bij de tolstations soms zo belachelijk druk is, dat je reis uren langer duurt. Met 2 jonge kinderen, en dit jaar ook een hond, achterin, is dat niet echt gezellig.
De overnachting in het hotel daarentegen is dat wel. Met z'n allen in 1 kamer, een leuk begin van de vakantie!!



This summer we went for the 4th year to Normandy. We have found there a place where we feel quite welcome and where we like being a lot. It is a big estate, one feels like being in the middle of nowhere, yet it is near near a city. The distance to the beach and nice cities is quite acceptable also.

Looking at the pictures of 4 years Normandy, one observes the development of the girls.
Three years ago the little fair-haired princess was a 1 year-old who could not walk yet, now she is an almost independent 4 year-old that goes to school. And the lady with the violin is a big girl of 8, wow.

This summer was our first holiday with Dustin, the guiding dog. He enjoyed the estate a lot. He enjoyed so much space and freedom.

Although one can drive to Normandy from Holland in one day easily, we have slept on the road to Normandy in a hotel in France. Because I am the only one who drives. But also it can be so ridiculously busy at the peage-stations, it can literally take hours. That's absolutely not convenient with two young kids -and also a dog this year- in the back of the car.

The night in the hotel is nice. With all 4, no 5, of us in one room, makes that a nice start of our holidays!!

story of the dog (5): Dustin

We hebben al eerder kennis gemaakt met de geleidehond die voor mijn lief bestemd is. Precies een maand geleden kwam hij bij ons wonen.

Maak kennis met Dustin, de geweldige golden doodle!
Hij is lief, hij is knap, hij is mooi, hij is jong, hij is getraind en hij is zooooo welkom.



We have visited the school several times and during those visits we met the dog which is meant to help my love. Since friday July 9th our family was extended with him.

Meet Dustin, the wonderful golden doodle!
He is so sweet, he so so handsome, he is so intelligent, he is young, he is trained and he is soooooo welcome!

story of the dog (4): blindengeleidehondenschool

Er zijn in Nederland een paar erkende blindengeleidehondenscholen. Er is een grote, van het KNGF, en een aantal kleinere waaronder de Martin Gaus geleidehondenschool en Desudo. Je bent vrij om te kiezen van welke school je een hond wilt hebben.

Wij voelden ons het meest aangetrokken tot een kleinschalige school en hebben gekozen voor die van Martin Gaus. Er was gelijk een klik, niet onbelangrijk.

Na een uitvoerig gesprek bij ons thuis, zijn we eind april een middag op bezoek gegaan in Lelystad bij de school. Om verder kennis te maken, eens wat honden te zien en om mijn lief te laten voelen hoe het nu echt werkt, zo'n geleidehond.

Wat bijzonder zeg! En wat kunnen die honden veel! 'Zoek deur' en de hond gaat met zijn neus bij de deurklink staan. 'Zoek stoel' en de hond zoekt in een donkere ruimte een vrije stoel. Ze lopen alleen wel enorm hard.

We hebben kennis gemaakt met een aantal honden. Allemaal even lief en bijzonder!!




In the Netherlands there are several recognized schools which train guiding dogs. One big school, the KNGF, and several smaller schools, among which the 'Martin Gaus guiding & helping dogs school' and 'Desudo. You are free to choose which school fits best with you.

We felt best with a smaller school and chose for Martin Gaus. Immediately there was a 'click' and that is not unimportant!

After a long talk at our home, we visited in april the school in Lelystad. To get further acquainted, to meet and greet some dogs and to let my love experience how it feels, walking with a guiding dog.

Wow, that was so special! And those dogs are so very well trained.
'Search door', and the dog finds a door and put his nose at the heck.
'Search chair', and the dogs finds an empty chair for you in a dark room.
And they walk quit quickly ;-)
We met several dogs, all of them even sweet and special !!

De tas voor mijn schoonmoeder is klaar!!! Nog een paar weekjes, dan is ze jarig en krijgt ze hem.

• 16 blokken
• 3 verschillende patronen
• in 16 verschillende combinaties van
• 7 kleuren wit, blauw en paars
• en kijk: met mijn eigen labeltje!!!

En ondertussen heb ik gisteren ook de laatste, 35e, gebloemde zeshoek gemaakt. Ze nu nog even leuk combineren en aan elkaar zetten en dan ...



The bag for my mother in laws' birthday is finished!!! Her birthday is just a few weeks away.

story of the dog, part 3: dogsim

We moesten ook wel lachen tijdens het traject.
Onderdeel was dat mijn lief, om een medische indicatie te krijgen, een wandeling met een dogsim moest maken. Dit is een metalen frame, vol software, om een geleidehond mee te simuleren. Het lijkt totaal niet op een hond, maar het schijnt wel vergelijkbaar te functioneren. De dogsim wordt bestuurd door een begeleider die achter je loopt.

Lief had hier totaal geen zin in, maar ja, wat moet dat moet. En op een zonnige donderdagochtend toen er niemand thuis was, heeft hij een wandelingetje gemaakt.


We also had fun:
Part of the route in the application of the guiding dog was that my love, for getting the medical indication of needs, had to walk with a dogsim. This is a metal frame, filled with with software, to simulate a guiding dog. It doesn't look like a dog at all, but they say it 'works' the same. The dogsim is being guided by a professional companion who walks just behind you.

My dear husband didn't like this part at all, but hey, what has to be done, has to be done. So, on a sunny thursdaymorning, when nobody was home, he made the walk. But since the dogsim is guided by someone else, he just absolutely refused to tell 'the dog' it had to go left ...

story of the dog, part 2: the official part

De beslissing om een aanvraag te doen voor een blindengeleidehond heeft natuurlijk zijn tijd nodig. Je moet voor elkaar toegeven dat het zicht zo slecht is geworden dat bepaalde ondersteuning best prettig kan zijn. Je moet er over nadenken of je echt een hond in je gezin wilt hebben. Een voordeel, de kinderen waren wild enthousiast bij het vooruitzicht!

En dan het traject dat je moet doorlopen.
Er zijn natuurlijk criteria waar je aan moet voldoen om in aanmerking te komen voor een blindegeleidehond. En dat is waar een ietwat langdurig en rommelig proces voor ons van start ging. We zijn weken bezig geweest met het verkrijgen van de juiste informatie (wat is nu precies zijn gezichtsveld en zijn visus) en om bij de juiste persoon terecht te komen die een indicatie kan afgeven.

Om in aanmerking te komen voor een blindengeleidehond heb je twee indicaties nodig: een medische indicatie en een praktische indicatie. Grofweg gezegd: zie je slecht genoeg en ben je in staat om met een hond te lopen en met een hond om te gaan. De medische indicatie wordt afgegeven door een regionale instelling voor slechtzienden, de praktische indicatie door de geleidehondenschool.

Toen we eenmaal de juiste mensen gevonden hadden, waren de indicaties vrij snel geregeld.

Vervolgens wordt een aanvraag ingediend bij de ziektekostenverzekering. Deze beoordeelt de aanvraag op basis van de indicaties. De aanvraag was vrij snel voorlopig goedgekeurd.

Daarna moet de geleidehondenschool een hond met de cliënt matchen. De verzekering moet ook instemmen met deze match. Wij waren zo gelukkig dat de verzekering ook dit snel heeft goedgekeurd.

It takes time to make the proper decision and really apply for a guiding dog. You have to admit to yourself and to each other that the vision has worstened for instance, that you might be helped with some extra support. You have to think about the question whether you like to have a dog in your house and your familiy. Well, we had one big advantage, the girls were overenthousiastic with the idea of propabaly, eventually having a dog!

Also the route of applying for a guiding dog takes lots of time. There are several criteria which you have to meet before you can start the application.

And this is where a kind of long and messy process started for us. It took us weeks to get the proper information (what is his vision, how 'much' can he actually see) and to reach the proper guy or girl who gives an indication for his needs.

To 'qualify' for a guiding dog, you need two differend indications of needs: a madical one and a practical one. To say it boldly: is your vision bad enough and are you able to walk with and tkae care of a dog? The medical indication is given by a regional organisation for visually handicapped, the practical indication by the school which trains the dog.

When we finally found the right people, the indications were settled quite quickly. His vision really is quite bad.

After the indications, the application goes to the health insurance company. Over there they decide about the application based on both indications. In my loves case, they insurance company decided positively on the application in just a few weeks.

Next step is matching dog and client by the guiding dog training school. The insurance company also has to approve the match. Luckily this was settled quickly also.

De tas voor mijn schoonmoeders verjaardag is bijna klaar. En gaat er volgens mij best mooi uitzien ...

En ik heb al weer een nieuw verzoek: een vriend van ons gaat binnen enkele maanden op reis naar Nepal. Hij heeft me gevraagd om een klein dekentje te maken, dat hij dan daar kan schenken aan bijvoorbeeld een kindertehuis.

Ik heb al mooie kleurtjes uitgezocht om een Nederlandse kust-deken van te maken!
De andere toekomstige creaties moeten even wachten.


The bag I am crocheting for my mother-in-laws birthday is almost finished. I am convinced it'll look quite nice.

And I already have a new request: a friend of us will travel to Nepal in a few months. He asked me to crochet a small blanket, which he will donate to an orphanage for example.

I have decided on the colours already and will start the Dutch seaside blanket soon!
My other future creations will have to wait a little longer.

yes, I did it again

Gisteren op mijn werk was ik blij verrast: de eerste exemplaren van de vierde editie van 'Ambulances in-zicht' (door mij geschreven en samengesteld) over het jaar 2009 lag op mijn bureau. Ben best een beetje trots dat het me voor het vierde jaar gelukt is!!!





Yesterday at work I was surprised, yet very happy. The first examples of 'Ambulances in-sight' (written by me) about the year 2009 were waiting for me on be desk. Actually I am quite proud I did it for the fourth year!!!

story of the dog, part 1

Mijn lief heeft een visuele handicap. Kort gezegd heeft hij een beperkt gezichtsveld en is hij nachtblind. Het is een progressieve aandoening, wat wil zeggen dat zijn zicht geleidelijk steeds slechter wordt en dat hij uiteindelijk blind zal worden.
Al een aantal jaren merken we, als de herfst zich aandient, dat zijn ogen toch weer wat achteruit gegaan zijn.

Wij hebben twee poezen, een hond zou bij ons ook erg welkom zijn. Maar aangezien we allebei drukke banen hebben, vinden we dat dat eigenlijk niet kan.
We maken al jaren, eigenlijk sinds we elkaar kennen, het grapje dat er bij ons pas een hond komt als lief zo slecht ziet dat hij veel aan een geleidehond zou kunnen hebben.

Afgelopen herfst zijn we ons toch maar eens gaan verdiepen in blindegeleidehonden: wanneer kom je ervoor in aanmerking, hoe verloopt zo'n traject, wat betekent het?


My love is visually handicapped. His sight is very narrow and at night (when it is dark) he hardly sees anything. It is an progressive ..., that means that his sights worsenes slowly and eventually he wil turn blind. For years now we notice every fall that his eyes have gotten worse during the past year.

We have two cats, a dog would be very welcome in our familiy. But we both have a busy job, so it hardly is possible. We always make the joke that we will only get a dog when my loves sight is bad enough to profite from a guiding dog.

Last fall we dived into the subject of guiding dogs: how to apply for a dog, what does actually mean a guiding dog, does a dog really fit into our familie, how to get a guiding dog and how long will it take?
